Windows 8 apps to aid your New Year resolutions

Modern Jago is Microsoft's new space in Shoreditch for designers, developers and artists. We run and host events and open the space for folks to come down and co-work. Want to find out more about the space? You can have a chat to us on Twitter or Facebook, or find us in a bunch of other places.

New Year is the perfect time to stop, reflect on the past year and kick off any changes you want to make to your life.

It may be as simple as walking more, or as adventurous as travelling the world. You might have a clear goal, or you may need some inspiration. Here’s the five most common New Year’s resolutions and the apps you need to help you on your way.

Get fit and healthy

The most common goal and often most difficult is to get fit, be more healthy and ditch the fad diets in favour of quality exercise. To help, try out Endomondo – a fitness app that tracks your various sporting activities and hooks into other gadgets such as the FitBit, a device for tracking your steps and sleep. There is also a Windows Phone app for tracking on the go.

Reduce your debt

The state of the UK Economy has made sure everyone is tightening their purse strings. It can be hard to control your spending and managing debt without full visibility on what you buy, which is why the app Just Money is so useful. Not only does it look so pretty that you’ll be sure to regularly check it, but it categorises everything you buy so you know where the money is going and whether its on the essentials, or unnecessary items.

Be more productive

Workloads are getting increasingly heavy with no signs of letting up, so productivity is more than just a buzz word. The more work you do, the more free time you have for the things you care about – and if that’s your work, then you can always work more! To help get things done quicker, try Toolbox for Windows 8. The app shows a multiple view of tools, so you can quickly access information and resources you need, from the one screen.

Travel more

Fancy getting out and seeing more of the world? Of course you do! There are so many places to visit and so little time to do fit it all in. Then there is the cost – the more you travel, the further you go, the higher the cost. That’s why Skyscanner for Windows 8 is just perfect for the budding traveller. It finds the cheapest and soonest flights so you can be anywhere in the world you want to be in a matter of days, maybe even hours.

Stay in touch with friends & family

If you feel like you don’t keep in touch with friends and family as much as you should, then why not change that in 2013? Facebook may be good for seeing updates from your friends, but there’s nothing better than a face to face chat – and Skype for Windows 8 is the perfect way to do this. No matter where you are in the world, there is always someone to talk to – better yet, the service is free if the person is using Skype too.
