Last week Microsoft Evangelist Andrew Spooner held one of the few exclusive Windows 8 Design and UX workshops, introducing designers and developers to the new Windows 8 operating system and the design and UX patterns that exist in Windows Store apps. It was a full house at Modern Jago as a mix of people with background in design and development, who are interested in, or already are, developing for Windows 8.

In the morning, after a hearty breakfast, attendees learned about Modern UI, with Andrew explaining the new Windows experience and design principles that manifest themselves in this new style of application. Later in the day, after lunch, Andrew built upon the essential idea for an app and took people through the process of turning it into a fully fledged Windows Store application.

There are only a few more Windows 8 Design and UX workshops coming up, so why sign up to attend one now. Want to see what the day involves and what past attendees thought of the day? Then simply watch this video:

Digital Wallet Foundry, an event series designed to encourage the development of digital wallet applications, continued on the week of April 15th with the latest event focussing on facilitating and supporting loyalty and identity services. The week also played host to an exciting 48 hour app building hackathon. We covered the first day and now we’re able to share the results of the week and winners of the hackathon.

A team from Lloyds Banking Group – made up of digital project manager Ravi Jain and digital graduate Jay Bashir – claimed victory on the final day of the Loyalty & Identity week; with a proof-of-concept app, dubbed Verify Me. The proposition of the app was to ease customer verification during point of sale that requires credit or identification checks, for example; a phone contract or tenancy agreement. Plus the app would check for applicable incentives that might be available to the consumer. All of this would be done at check-out via the touch of a button on your mobile phone. No need for paper Ids or lengthy processes for credit checks.

Experts were on hand throughout the week offering talks and in-depth sessions to help attendees and teams identify the roles and responsibilities of the key industry players and where opportunities exist for innovation.

“Here was a team of true corporate employees, quite unfamiliar with the world of start ups and hackathons,” says Payment Pioneer, Julian Wilson who was one of the experts on hand throughout the week. “They came together without an idea, yet their solution was creative and pragmatic: it turned an asset (currently an operational cost) into a driver of two real new revenue streams. It solved a real recognisable frustrating problem: signing up to a contract on the spur of the moment,” Julian added, before elaborating further with: “The most exciting and impressive thing about this app, is that it not only solves a real problem but does so as a logical extension to systems which already existed,” systems which were ready and waiting for the right thinking to augment and reimagine. “Without change in strategic direction or diversion, as simple as a new button on the LBH banking application and a different use of their existing identification and credit checking services. They deserved to win,” he concluded.

What was Digital Wallet Foundry experience like for the winning team? “The presentations on the first day gave us a great insight into the industry and purposes of the event. We had the support of the Microsoft guys, the FreedomPay platform and independent developers (at Digital Wallet Foundry) to actually make it into a solution we can take back to our organisation and develop further,” explained Bashir; “There’s been a lot of knowledge sharing and a lot of innovative thinking.” “We’ve definitely had interest and there is definitely weight behind the idea, so hopefully we can progress it further,” added Jain.

Richard Peers of Microsoft, the event organiser, said “Hackathons have many purposes: social; skills; new ideas and hopefully coded examples of breakthrough solutions. With Digital Wallet Foundry we tried to bring this format to corporations and the result is an unqualified success. The solution from Lloyds was remarkable and they were the clear winner. But it was the community that provided the spark and in that all participants and entrants can feel proud.”

You can view a full video of the results and an interview with the winning team here.

The Digital Wallet Foundry continued on April 15th, with the latest event in the series focussing on facilitating and supporting loyalty and identity services. This ongoing series is designed to encourage the development of digital wallet applications.

Experts are on hand throughout this week to help attendees identify the roles and responsibilities of the key industry players and where opportunities exist for innovation. The week kicked off with a day of setting the scene, great talks from industry experts and insightful questions from the audience.

Expert Speaker Sessions

Richard Peers of Microsoft welcomed the attendees before handing over to Payment Pioneer, Julian Wilson, to set the scene for the digital payments industry and offer an entrepreneurs’ perspective. Julian highlighted that “vision, people, attitude and timing are as important as technical elegance” when building a business.”

With the exciting focus areas of Identity and Loyalty, Nick Norman of Consult Hyperion (specialists in mobile payments) was well placed to delve deeper into the logic and ecosystems before handing over to Rafaele Petruzzo, Director of Business Development & Innovation of Tesco Bank. Rafeale offered the perspective of both a retailer and a financial services provider; “Large retail stores effect mobile signal. This seems trivial but could stop enabling of mobile payments in-store”.

Zoe Cunningham, MD of Softwire gave a great talk on the future of loyalty and painted and exciting future for loyalty in digital. Zoe suggested that “gamification” will play a big role on creating engaging and rewarding loyalty experiences; “Badges as digital loyalty rewards are an exciting proposition,” consumers could be rewarded around number of purchases, frequency, time and more. Rafael Petruzzo highlighted that Tier 1 acceptable merchant integration must ensure loyalty AND payment processes are seamless & fast: “A second longer at the till could cost us millions,” he said.

The final expert talk was given by Christopher Kronenthal, CTO of FreedomPay, who revealed that “Payments was a transaction business, now it is an information business” before demonstrating their white label platform for the attendees.

The Hackathon

The afternoon focussed on dedicated face to face sessions with the experts around both the business and the technical side of digital wallet apps. We also saw the beginnings of the 48 hour hackathon competition unfold as teams began to develop and build their ideas.

Who will claim victory on Friday?

We’ll be posting a full recap of the results of the hackathon, which will be judged on Friday 19th April. In the mean time you can get a deeper glimpse of Digital Wallet Foundry and keep track of what’s to come via #DigitalWalletFoundry

The following is a guest post from Payment Entrepreneur Julian Wilson who helped us put the event together and will be our MC and ‘matchmaker’ throughout the week. There are still tickets available so get yours here, now.

Last month we explored how the term digital wallet has grown to mean many things to many people. What was once a container for payment instruments is now more a of ‘messaging layer’ for all sorts of data. Within this view payment has become just one part (albeit an important one) of an overall ‘proposition’.

So assuming this is true then what else is happening in that digital wallet?

There are probably two classes of service that cover most of the ‘other stuff’ going on: Identification and Loyalty.

Identity:

Those of us from an IT background probably still think of Active Directory or LDAP (X.509) or RSA certificates when the word identity is used. In payment circles it may be KYC (know your customer) and AML (anti-money laundering). but in the context of a Digital Wallet, Identity may mean much more: can i access a building or a service? Am I able to drive a car or this car? Am i a member here? am I over 18? etc. Proving that we are who we purport to be &/or have the required privileges to do something, is critical. Digital Wallets connected to networks, can support identification services in many ways using a mix of things we know and things we own.

The second area we will look at is Loyalty:

Operating a loyalty program means the issuing of a coupon with an associated value and a list of places where it can be spent (redeemed).

A bit like a ‘closed loop’ currency that can only be spent on certain goods in certain places. And these controls were necessary for reasons of security and economics.

The principal justification of a loyalty scheme has always been to increase two things: propensity to buy and the value of a transaction (to generate more profit per customer for its ‘operator’). The arrival of smartphones and their ‘ecosystems’ of applications may be about to change things. Firstly the costs for operating and participating in a loyalty scheme have dropped rapidly. Secondly when smartphones plus network services are used to validate and identify the coupon, the owner and the goods: then theoretically (at least) most outlets could be participating in most schemes. So does loyalty start to look like a payment instrument…?

Once again we have invited some experts to help us to understand the considerations. We don’t profess to have the answers but we do plan to conceive some ideas and build some applications.

As a developer the event was designed for you.

What the DWF offers developers:

Expert opinions to help form or sanity check an idea; learn key techniques of agile product development; set up of your own AZURE cloud services expert tuition on Wallet, Windows 8 and Windows Phone app; free working facility at your disposal during the DWF week; all catering has been sponsored by Nokia; help with writing your business case access to potential funding sources recognition and awards (for completed developments)

Digital Wallet Foundry, continues on April 15th with the second event focused on loyalty and identity.

Our primary goal remains to encourage the development of wallet applications. In our first Digital Wallet Foundry we looked at how digital wallets facilitated payment services, we are now looking at how it supports loyalty and identity services. With the help of experts we will try to identify the roles and responsibilities of the key players and importantly where opportunities exist for innovation.

Mobile wallets have to work harder than analogue wallets. If we are to make a change to long held consumer behaviour we need to improve speed, convenience, lower cost and utility with no risk. This session will bring into focus all these elements as Loyalty and Identity are central to the success of these criteria

Example: A customer uses their Mobile to seamlessly check their balance; buy a DVD in store; download a music gift card; redeem a store discount voucher and check out whilst automatically topping up Loyalty card points.

Who will be here?

Developers, designers, industry leaders and people with a view. If you’re a one man band or a leader of a team of hundreds, if you have an application idea (or want one) this event is for you.

Why should I attend?

Sanity check, reject or conceive ideas with help from thought leaders and industry experts.

Then realise your idea in 48 hours with expert help on everything from coding to agile project development to business planning.

Please come prepared to do.
